Here is a list of my favorite picture books to read in the fall season. This list includes books for the holidays of Thanksgiving/Turkey Day, Indigenous People’s Day, Halloween, as well as general autumn season books.
(You can always find these books at your local library for free. However, if you choose to purchase them, you can support your local bookstores (and this blog) from the affiliate links below.)
The Changing Seasons
This is one of my all-time favorites! This book would be great to read when you start learning about the seasonal cycle and what changes occur during the year as we make our way around the sun. It is so clever and fun to read.
Exploring Outside
We’re Going on a Leaf Hunt is an adaptation from We’re Going on a Bear Hunt. It will get you both excited about exploring outside and going on your own leaf hunt. You can pair this with learning about the parts of a leaf and learning about different types of trees. Leaves always make fun crafts as well!
Indigenous People’s Day
This book is not only great for learning about Cherokee culture, but also for learning about math in a subtle way. With beautiful illustrations, it presents the math concept of volume and capacity.
Taking Care of Your Things
Using your things wisely and valuing what you already have, are concepts that our modern consumer society has nearly forgotten. This charming true story is another great book to read on Indigenous People’s Day, Thanksgiving, or really anytime during the year.
Losing Baby Teeth
This hilarious book is about a young vampire who lost his baby fang. He gets into an argument with the tooth fairy, so if you have sensitive kids, you may want to read through it first or prepare them prior to reading. It’s a FUN book to read around Halloween and to talk about what happens when you lose your baby teeth.
Working Together/Sequence
You will have fun changing your voices for each of the characters when reading this book (Especially saying “Drat” in your best vampire voice). It also incorporates the concept of sequence when reading through the rhythmic pattern in the story. It will get you in the mood to make some pumpkin pie together!
Kindness
You cannot have a list of Halloween books without including Room on the Broom. It is a story about a kind witch written with beautiful poetry and wit. This book, along with a few other books by Julia Donaldson, has a short film version on Prime.
Counting
Little Goblins Ten has a variety of cute Halloween creatures to count. This rhythmic tale is based on the classic nursery rhyme, “Over in the Meadow.” Your child will enjoy counting the little creature families in their unique homes that are beautifully illustrated.
Animals and Their Sounds
This sweet story is about a little ghost looking for her, “boo.” As she wanders around she finds other animals who make sounds similar to her, “boo.” You will enjoy shouting “BOO!” together at the end to help the little ghost get her, “boo” back.
Parts of the Face
You will also find this book on my Best Toddler books. It is a favorite of mine. It not only is a good review of the parts of the face and colors, but it provides the opportunity to discuss what is real and not real. You can also purchase/make a felt puppet that goes along with the story that allows you to remove each part of the face as you read through the book.
Farm Animals
Turkey Trouble has become popular in the past couple years for a good reason. It is hilarious! Thanksgiving/Turkey Day is coming up and Turkey tries to camouflage himself as other animals on the farm. It’s another good book to review the types of animals on a farm.
Thankfulness
This story has a beautiful message about being grateful for what you have and the value of community. It is not an obvious “Thanksgiving” book, but it gets to the heart of what we should be celebrating during the season of Thanksgiving.
